Stator definition

In an electric motor, the stator provides a magnetic field that drives the rotating armature; in a generator, the stator converts the rotating magnetic field to electric current. In fluid powered devices, the stator guides the flow of fluid to or from the rotating part of the system.

What is rotor and stator?

The rotor is the rotating part of a machine. In electrical motors or generators, the whole linear synchronously rotating part of the machine is termed the rotor. The stator is the non-moving, fixed counterpart in a machine.

What is a stator in an electric motor?

The stator is the stationary component of electromagnetic circuits in motors. In different configurations, stators may act as field magnets that interact with the rotor to create motion, or as armatures that work with moving field coils on the rotor.

What does a stator do in an alternator?

The main stator is the main component part an AC generator (or alternator). It is where the electrical energy is created to supply a load. The alternators excitation system attempts to control the voltage generated in the main stator to a pre-set point.

What happens when stator goes out?

The stator coil generates the power for the spark plug and other accessories on small engines Without a stator there would be no spark at all, meaning the engine won't run. While a stator is dying, it can produce a weak spark, causing the engine to miss or run poorly. Symptoms are often worsened as the engine warms up.

What causes a stator to fail?

When a stator fails, it is largely due to the degradation or aging of its insulation through external occurrences and materials being introduced into its system.

Is a stator DC or AC?

The stator is the coil of wire housed inside the engine case. A magnet on a shaft spins within the stator, creating alternating current (AC).

Why is it called a stator?

A stator is the static part of rotary electromagnetic devices such as electric motors, alternators, and generators. It represents one of the two primary components of the device, the other being the moving rotor that supplies the working output.

What is stator and armature?

The armature provides housing and support to the armature winding. In electrical machines, the magnetic field is generated by a permanent magnet or electromagnet. The armature winding interacts with the magnetic field formed in the air gap. The stator can be a rotating part (rotor) or stationary part (stator).

Does a stator need a battery?

They do require batteries for power, however, which is a potential drawback in comparison with a motorcycle's alternator system. Because a stator generates its own electricity, motorcycles have systems which are relatively lightweight compared to those in a car or truck.

Does a stator charge a battery?

The battery would quickly be depleted, though, if not for the star of the charging system show, the stator. Think of your stator as the piece that makes electricity to keep your battery charged up to make all that electrical stuff on your bike work.

What is the advantage of stator?

Stator laminations reduce eddy current by insulating the core. Thin silicon steel plates are stacked on top of one another around the center, preventing eddy current flow. With the eddy current reduced, the stator core can maintain constant power, keeping your motor running.

Can a stator drain a battery?

The role of the stator is to charge the battery while the motorcycle is on. When a stator has gone bad, that means the motorcycle is running off of battery power alone which will quickly drain it.

How do I know if my stator is working?

If this stator is in good condition. It should be reading between 0.3. And 0.5 ohms. As you can see

What can damage a stator?

Your stator will wear out over time. Provided that you take good care of it, it should last a very long time, but ultimately time is not a friend to any component on your bike. The other main cause for your stator failing on you is a power overload. This can happen when you run too many accessories at the same time.

How much does a stator cost?

The Stator is priced at $3,995, though you'll only need to put down $250 to reserve your own Stator.

Can a stator be repaired?

Fixing a stator usually involves unwinding and cleaning the original stator core, then rewinding it with a machine or carefully by hand. It starts with looking at the coil heads for damaged or burned wires, then cutting out the protective rubber coating from damaged coils.

Is replacing a stator hard?

Replacing the stator is not too complicated and requires a socket set and some heat resistant gasket repair silicone only.

What burns out a stator?

A bad diode in a rectifier will dump AC current into a system. The AC current heats up the stator and the heat destroys the insulation and ultimately carbonizes it turning it into a low resistance brick.

Can water damage a stator?

Saltwater flooding poses additional problems. Unless thoroughly flushed from the equipment before it dries, the residual salt will rust the steel laminations of the stator and rotor cores. It may also corrode the copper windings and aluminum or copper rotor cages.
