Infrared window

An Infrared Inspection Window is a window that is used to separate environments of differing pressures or temperatures while allowing light energy at a specified electromagnetic wavelength to pass between the two environments.

Where is the infrared window?

An IR window is a data collection point installed in the metal cover of the electrical switchgear.

What are infrared windows made of?

The most common materials used in IR windows are Calcium fluoride, Sapphire, IR Polymer, Germanium, Zinc Selenide and Barium Fluoride. Historically, Calcium Fluoride and Barium Fluoride were the most commonly used infrared window optic materials.

What are the infrared window regions?

In the Earth's atmosphere this window is roughly the region between 8 and 14 μm although it can be narrowed or closed at times and places of high humidity because of the strong absorption in the water vapor continuum or because of blocking by clouds.

What is IR inspection?

Infrared Inspections Infrared (IR) inspection is a diagnostic tool that can be used to help identify conditions that cause outages and equipment damage.

Can infrared penetrate Earth's atmosphere?

Some wavelengths of infrared radiation pass through the Earth's atmosphere, while others are blocked - this gives rise to 'infrared windows' which can be measured from the ground.

What is the atmospheric window How is it closed?

The curtain (atmospheric window) blocks specific wavelengths like gamma rays. But in reality, the curtain is the water vapor, ozone, carbon dioxide, and molecules in the atmosphere. These blocked wavelengths are known as “absorption bands”. Holes in the curtain are the “atmospheric window”.

Where is the atmospheric window?

The places with limited or almost no absorption by the atmosphere is known as the atmospheric window - allowing us to peer into the atmosphere at various wavelengths. Taking advantage of these "windows", we look at the atmosphere at various wavelengths.

What is germanium lens?

Germanium lenses are optical lenses made of polished germanium. Germanium Optics are rugged and resistant to corrosion, and are ideal for harsh environments and applications where there is constant exposure to the elements.

What are the 2 atmospheric windows?

A range of wavelengths over which there is relatively little absorption of radiation by atmospheric gases. The major windows are the visible window, from ∼0.3 to ∼0.9 μm; the infrared window, from ∼8 to ∼13 μm; and the microwave window, at wavelengths longer than ∼1 mm.

How many atmospheric windows are there?

An atmospheric window is a range of wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that can pass through the earth's atmosphere. The optical, infrared and radio windows comprise the three main atmospheric windows.

What are infrared waves?

Infrared waves, or infrared light, are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. People encounter Infrared waves every day; the human eye cannot see it, but humans can detect it as heat. A remote control uses light waves just beyond the visible spectrum of light—infrared light waves—to change channels on your TV.

Is infrared home inspection worth it?

Infrared imaging can tell the buyer a lot about a house, and makes damage that may not have been noticed otherwise easy to find. It is a good idea for owners to have an infrared scan of the home before selling so that they can find and fix any serious problems.

Can infrared see electricity?

Infrared cameras cannot see through electrical cabinets or solid metal bus trays. Whenever possible open enclosures so the camera can directly see the electrical circuits and components.

Do home inspectors use infrared?

Applications of IRT in Home Inspections As a home inspector, it is your job to identify serious defects, but sometimes defects may be completely hidden in plain sight. When included in routine inspections, IR cameras can assist inspectors in identifying these hidden defects.

Is infrared harmful to humans?

The frequency of the radiation: visible radiation, such as UV or X-rays, can damage genetic material. Invisible radiation, such as the radiation from infrared heating, is harmless for the human body provided the power, distance and duration are appropriate.

What are the dangers of infrared waves?

Prolonged exposure to IR radiation causes a gradual but irreversible opacity of the lens. Other forms of damage to the eye from IR exposure include scotoma, which is a loss of vision due to the damage to the retina. Even low-level IR absorption can cause symptoms such as redness of the eye, swelling, or hemorrhaging.

What does an infrared image look like?

Infrared photography has a strong appeal for fine art photography. It looks very surreal and otherworldly, with trees taking on a bright white or yellow hue, and skies a red or blue hue. Leaves appear frozen over and skies take on dramatic colors in both black and white and color photography.

Why mountains are called radiation windows?

"If a mountain top is open and exposed it can absorb the sun's radiation and re-emit it as heat thereby warming the nearby air," says Creed.

What do you mean by radiation window?

What we call a "radiative window" is a set of wavelengths where there is a high probability for the photon emitted by the surface to escape the Earth's atmosphere.
